The Sri Lanka Lions Sports Club New South Wales
The Sri Lanka Lions Sports Club New South Wales was formed in 1979 by Kularatna De SILVA, Tiddy WIJERATNE and Don JAYASINGHE where Kularatna De SILVA was also appointed as the Clubs’ Inaugural President.
With the clubs primary sport being cricket, it initially participated in the South Sydney District Cricket Association competition from 1980 – 1985. Better known as the ‘Lions’ in the cricketing circles, the club further went on to participate in the Inter-cultural Cricket Tournament vying for the prestigious Sir. Viv Richards Trophy, where the Lions emerged champions in 1990. The club was a participant in this tournament from 1986 – 1994. Moving on, the Lions went on to make its presence in the Canterbury/Bankstown Cricket Association competition from 1995 – 2002 and in the Parramatta District Cricket Association competition from 2003 – 2010.
In 2010 the Lions joined the Sydney Masters Cricket Association in participating in the Masters Over 40’s and the Classics Over 50’s Competitions. Currently, the Lions participate in the Classics Over 50’s and the Vintage Over 60’s completions where the Classics have held the title of back to back ‘Champions’ for the past four season. The Lions further possesses a Social team for individuals of past and present seeking to participate in this great game of Cricket.
